Just when all the other shrubs and trees are in fruit and shedding their leaves - the Mahonia comes into flower at the start of winter.
How do plants know what the seasons are?
What advantage does this species achieve by having such a different flowering and fruiting cycle? The wonders of nature never cease to amaze.
