... of the memorial to President James A. Garfield in Lakeview Cemetery in Cleveland. President Garfield, known as the "last of the log cabin presidents", was born in Ohio on November 19, 1831. According to an online biography, he rose from humble beginnings to serve as a college president, a nine-time congressman, and military general before his election to the United States presidency in 1881. His life was cut short by an assassin's bullet just a few short months after his election. Today my granddaughter and I visited the memorial where he, along with his wife and two of their sons are buried. The view from the top, on a clear day, shows downtown Cleveland and the Lake Erie shoreline. I took a few other pictures and my granddaughter took some too. I will try to post them in a day or two for any history buffs who might be interested. Future blips might feature the log cabin in which he was born and the lovely, large farmhouse he later built for his family in Mentor, Ohio. He believed that anyone who wanted to know about his presidential platform should come to see him, and legend says that he did most of the campaigning from the front porch of that home.
