Dinner
It's just crazy in the water off the wharf--the ocean is covered in birds: seagulls, cormorants, pelicans, and thick with countless sea lions, everyone diving and slurping and shrieking and barking. The gulls steal from the pelicans, as there is usually part of a fish hanging out of a big orange bill as it comes out of the water. Sometimes there is a terrible tug of war, and the poor pelican can't get clear of the crowd to tilt his head up enough to swallow. There must be millions and millions of anchovies beneath the surface; it's hard to imagine the number of fish that these creatures are consuming. We spent a good hour out there in the noise and excitement. There is something about the whole thing that just makes me stand there and giggle.
