rough rack

I've seen a mule deer sporting a nice rack of antlers before, but this particular buck seems to have some rough edges around his ears. I wonder what that is about?
But he will shed them in due time and grow a new set next year.
Wouldn't it be great if we could all shed our rough edges and start over?
