Wells Cathedral, West Front.
I had the chance to spend today walking in the mountains but, both yesterday and the day before, the mountain-area weather forecasts for today in Snowdonia and in the Lakes has been pretty poor. Woke this morning and the 24-hour forecast in both areas for the rest of today looks absolutely great, but I am not there because I trusted the two-day forecast and stayed in Bristol. Doh.
Memo to self (for the thousandth time): if you get a chance to go to the mountains, just take it and ignore the weather forecast.
Decided instead to visit Wells as have not been to the cathedral there since 2001. It was almost deserted and very photographer-friendly: camera permit costs £3.00 and they're happy for you to use a tripod.
I took several photos of the beautiful interior, but when I left the Cathedral at lunchtime the low November midday sun was lighting up the West Front, casting shadows that threw the statues and recesses into very detailed relief. A really beautiful bit of lighting for a truly wonderful bit of architecture. England's first all-gothic Cathedral, this view has been pretty much identical since they finished it in 1260.
For this one, you really must press 'L' to see it large.
