Fay's Bistro

Some years ago Calne's last bakery closed down, its premises swallowed up by a supermarket expansion, and I have ever since bemoaned the impossibility of buying a decent loaf of bread locally. To be fair, the good people of Calne in the main seem quite happy with their factory-fresh supermarket sliced white. To some extent, Calne is a dormitory town with a tradition of people shopping elsewhere, so I expect those with slightly more exotic tastes probably regularly bring home bread bought whilst commuting.

I was pleased, therefore, to read in their advance publicity, that Fay's Bistro planned to include a delicatessen which would include a selection of loaves delivered fresh daily from Bath Bakery, so I wandered along on their launch day, prior to their opening for business the next Monday, to make enquiries.

Fay is a Canadian who hosted an evening TV show there before settling in the UK, running a gift card company and moving into catering in Malmesbury and, now, Calne. I told her how pleased I was that it was now possible to buy good bread without making a thirty mile round trip, and she gave me a complimentary large malted loaf and advised me on how best to keep it. I also had a free cappuccino and some samples of carrot cake and pizza at one of their tables.

The bread was excellent and I dare say I shall be a regular customer.
