Ideas for Things to Do

We're always looking for new things to do during our celebration weeks and a couple of years ago we visited the Falkirk wheel with groups of families for our drawing competition.

It was a great success, so today I thought I should remind everyone just how much fun can be had in association with our canals in Scotland.

The canal I've taken a picture of it the Union Canal, running from Falkirk to Edinburgh, constructed originally to bring minerals, especially coal, to the capital.

Like many of our older ways of travel the construction of the railway link between Edinburgh and Glasgow resulted in its fall into commercial decline.

It became unused in many places until the Millennium Link was completed in 2000 and fortunately this meant it could be opened again to the public and it's now mainly for leisure purposes.

There are five canals and together with the Falkirk wheel and the ambitious helix project this means there's always something going on.

I'm just off for a walk along this stretch of the canal-it's at least a bit milder today.
