This is from my grandfather-in-law's diary, written in the most beautiful handwriting, who was fighting in Iraq in 1918 in the Mesopotamia Campaign. The British lost close on 100,000 soldiers and although Ottoman losses are unknown the British captured a total of 45,000 prisoners of war. These are figures I cannot contemplate.
