The City of Dougga
Dougga is one of the oldest towns in Tunisia. It began life as a Numidian walled citadel, absorbed Carthaginian influences and was then built over by the Romans. In AD 205 Septimius Severus re-named the town Municipium Thuggenses.
The building in the background is the Roman Capitol, built in AD 167 it is widely held to be one of the most beautiful ruins in Roman Africa.
The town was hastily fortified during the Byzantine period and in around AD 540 the Capitol was incorporated into a roughly built defensive wall, re-using Roman stonework.
