Historic Breakwater
At Brixham today there was a small ceremony, which was an ideal prelude to Remembrance Day. In the foreground is the breakwater, and the slipway and hards built in May 1943 for US forces training exercises for D Day landing. 2,500 US 4th Infantry and 32 amphibious DD tanks embarked from here on 4th June 1944 bound for Utah beach, followed by the loading and embarkation of supply convoys. The Mayor of Brixham unveiled a plaque provided by the Torbay Civic Society, and Ronnie Robinson gave a moving tribute to the US forces, and the sacrifice they made, and Brixham's important role in Operation Overlord.
The day was bright with a blue, blue sea and a keen wind. It is 9.00am - spot the swimmers.
