Hovering in space about 240,000 miles away! It does not orbit the Earth, rather both the Earth and the Moon orbit a common centre of gravity, the Barycentre. This point is situated about 1000 miles inside the surface of the Earth.
Here's something else to think about; as the Moon goes around the barycentre, at some stages in its orbit it will be heading towards the Sun and at other times moving away from it, yes? No, the Moon's movement around the Sun is always convex, it effectively orbits the Sun!
Kepler started from nothing, and using mostly Tycho Brahe's observations worked out the three laws of planetary motion. He was a towering genius and his achievements cannot be overstated. Here endeth my preaching for today!
