Loco - 'Union of South Africa'
Joining in the line-up of A4 steam locomotives at the National Rail Museum in York to celebrate the 75th anniversary of Mallards record breaking run in 1938 is the ‘Union of South Africa’, one of the six surviving steam locomotives designed by Sir Nigel Gresley. The ‘Union of South Africa’ is normally based at Thornton Yard, Scotland and is owned by John Cameron. It is approved for mainline use, and in British Rail green livery, and was originally built for the Coronation streamliner service.
Three sister locos in the line-up have already been blipped in my journal. ‘Sir Nigel Gresley’ on 31st October, ‘Bittern’ on 2nd and 3rd November, and ‘Mallard’ itself on 4th November. This leaves ‘Dominion of Canada’ and ‘Dwight D. Eisenhower’. ‘The Great Gathering’ lasts until November 11 so it’s fingers crossed for clear, uncluttered photographs of these remaining locos.
