The Pearce Institute

What a stunning morning coming into Glasgow, so I made a quick detour into Govan, as I have been wanting to photograph The Pearce Institute for a while and today the light was just right.

The Pearce Institute was designed by the eminent architect, Sir Robert Rowand Anderson (1834-1921) and is a striking example of Edwardian architecture. The building was completed in 1905.

The Institute was gifted to the people of Govan in 1906 by Lady Elizabeth Pearce in memory of her husband, Sir William Pearce, former owner of the Fairfield Shipbuilding Company and Govan’s flamboyant first Member of Parliament. Over 40 third sector organisations are based within the building, all sharing the common aim of meeting the needs of the people of Govan.

The Pearce Institute has undergone a programme of phased restoration work, which has included work to completely restore the roof and carry out repairs to stonework, as part of the Central Govan Action Plan and Govan Cross Townscape Heritage Initiative framework.
