Rob Roy
Stunning day in Wanaka and have to admit, I didn’t rush up. Just enjoyed the view, the sun, and had a leisurely breakfast. Just seriously divine!
So on a day this fantastic, what do you do? Well, for some time I’ve had a hankering to walk the Rob Roy track, so today was the perfect day to do it.
An hour’s drive from Wanaka, in the Matukituki Valley, it’s a stunning location. And then it’s a steady but moderate climb for the most part, on a well formed track. Except for a couple of areas where it’s washed out, and is definitely a little tricky. Don’t take your grandma.
You get glimpses of the glacier as you walk, but when you finally get to the upper lookout (yes, go all the way) it’s an unbelievably stunning view. A long lunch, lying in the grass looking at the spectacular views, and listening to avalanches of ice roaring down the hill. Amazing! How it sticks to the side of the mountain, who knows!
Back down, back to the house, cold beer watching the sunset, and then a spa. What a divine day. I think this could be the best day walk in NZ.
Feeling very peaceful …
