Penguin counting

The first of the Gentoo counts. Counting birds is pretty difficult as they have a tendency to move around, so we counted occupied nests - those that looked like they had penguins with eggs in them.

Four of us repeatedly counted small sections until we were happy that our figures were close enough to take an average. Numbers in this colony are down on last year but vary considerably by location and year that we won't be able to draw any conclusions for a while, and even then it's just a point on a big graph looking at very long term trends.
