plume of smoke ..........

we say a plume of smoke but wonder what is a "plume" ? .... well it's a structure or form that is like a long feather ...... i stopped briefly in the morning to take this blip near cockenzie power station but I had thought cockenzie was no longer operating so must be something else .........
