Hetty Pegler's Tump

This is the entrance to a partly reconstructed Neolithic transepted 120ft gallery grave that overlooks the Severn Valley. Hester 'Hetty' Pegler (d. 1694) was the wife of landowner Henry Pegler (d. 1695), its 17th century owner.
The barrow, also known as Uley Long Barrow, has been tentatively dated to 3300 - 3200 BC. The tump was excavated in the 19th century and 15 skeletons were found there. A later skeleton, presumed to be Roman, was also found in the roof of the mound, along with three 4th century Roman coins.
