Kelvingrove Art Gallery & Museum

This morning on my way into work I decided to take some detailed architectural shots of the north section of Kelvingrove Art Gallery & Museum.

Between 2003-6 Kelvingrove underwent a £28m restoration and modernisation programme. This involved sensitive reinstatement and extension of a Grade A-listed building — Glasgow City Council’s ‘jewel in the crown’.

Kelvingrove was built as part of the Glasgow International Exhibition of 1901. This was the biggest UK event (more than 11 million visitors) to be organised so far in the new century, although the 1900 Paris Exposition Universelle was the first exhibition of the twentieth century. The architectural style of Kelvingrove is best described as Spanish Baroque; indeed, the two main towers are inspired by those of the great pilgrimage church of Santiago de Compostela, in Santiago.

The building's architecture is one of Kelvingrove's delights. Many visitors spend as much time viewing the building and its architectural details and sculpture as they do admiring the collections housed within it.

Hope you all have a good Galoshins. I'm off to play another Curling match this evening.
