Lewes is famous for its bonfire night celebrations and has seven competing bonfire societies. Commercial Square Bonfire Society was founded in 1855 and its members wear North American Indian costumes. In the late 19th century some of its members went to America to work on the railway construction. On their return they started to wear North American Indian costumes in protest at the treatment of native Americans.
