Stromboli sunset

A view across to Stromboli from the village we were staying in on Lipari Island. Stromboli is the paler of the two shapes on the horizon.

We'd had a good day, catching the hydrofoil to Vulcano Island and then climbing to Vulcano's steaming crater. Our guide, Luca, did a great job of explaining how a caldera forms with the assistance of a stick, volcanic ash, and a lot of hand waving (he is Sicilian). We later declined the offer of sitting in sulfurous mud pools. There's a limit to how much rotten egg smell can be enjoyed in one day.

So a gentle start to the holiday. Another hydrofoil trip island hopped us on to Lipari, so we visited 2 Aeolian Islands on the first day
