The Great Scottish Tapestry

My wife and I paid our first visit to to the Great Scottish Tapestry which is currently based at Cockenzie House and Gardens in East Lothian. I say first visit as I feel it is just impossible to take it all in at one visit. Just too much to see and so many little details to revel in.

As well as looking at the panels I choose to archive them photographically in order to peruse the detail at my leisure and I have on this visit only covered about half of the exhibition.

As well as marvelling at the artwork and incredible amount of detailed needlework that has gone into this project I really like the primitivist and colourful style that its designer, Andrew Crummy has adopted. It was also a brilliant idea to let the many group who produced the panels bring their own ideas and interpretation to the borders. It has injected a whole strand of humour into the project which I particularly enjoyed.

Rather than show you some of the panels in their entirety for my blip, I've chosen to show you just a corner detail of one of the panels as it illustrates the immense amount of needlework craft that has gone into the project. The group have signed off their work with a conch shell that incorporates all the different needlework stitiches and the coloured threads which they have used throughout the picture.
