Scaffolding on the Column
Poor old Lord Hill, or rather his statue, which has been feeling it's age in a dangerously crumbly fashion. An impressively elaborate, and tall, web of scaffolding now encases all 133 feet of the column, and the 17ft statue on top too. The plan was to remove the statue and put up a newly commissioned replacement, but English Heritage have waded into the debate to point out that the statue cannot be removed until there is a clear plan with a date for the installation of the new one. Fair enough, perhaps, but maybe someone should have checked on that before all that expensive scaffolding was in place...
