NEW DINER IN TOWN
This lady cardinal was the first visitor to our new bird feeder. After a few months with only one feeder it was obvious that there were enough birds to warrant a second feeder, so my favorite blip assistant constructed this feeder to enhance the birds’ dining experience. Honestly, it is built as solid as our house – made of cedar (with a weatherproof coating), has a plexiglass back & screen front. The roof was trimmed back and the platform was widened so I’d have a clear shot of birds stopping by, and a rim was added around the platform to give them something to grip.
The idea was to fill it with a smaller, mixed seed so it would attract song birds, etc. – the first feeder has oiled sunflower seeds for the cardinals, etc. Why am I surprised to find that the cardinals have now staked a claim on this feeder as “theirs” too?! They seem to be ‘in charge’. (I was surprised to see this cardinal had her crest lying flat – I wonder if that’s because it is extra cold and windy today.)
