Knocking on Heaven's Door

We spent the day in Cahors today, about an hour south of where we live. It is a wonderful old town that dates back to Roman times and was the crossroads of Western Europe in medieval times. It is built in a long loop of the River Lot, and so is contained by it, retaining all its original charm, and having a sense almost of being an island. The vineyards in the surrounding countryside are home to the famous black wine of Cahors, so-called because of its impenetrably dark colour, courtesy of the Malbec grape. After lunch we wandered through the old town and spotted this original 17th century door with it's wonderfully carved stone setting.
