Lime Kiln

Many built in this area between 1700 and 1850. The purpose was to produce lime for spreading as a fertiliser onto the fields. The process involved building a big fire in the base of the structure and tipping blocks of limestone into the top, which the heat from the fire turned into powder. It was obviously very hot and heavy work and the workers were refreshed with jugs of local cider to quench their thirst. Having tasted the local cider, I find it difficult to understand how the workers could function afterwards having consumed a brew of this strength. I guess they just got used to it. I need to sit down having taken a small glass; others find it more prudent to sit before drinking the said small glass.
