Patcham War Memorial
Brighton is normally portrayed as a brash, alternative, outgoing seaside city - all of which is true, but it's also a city of quiet corners where bits of history lurk. One of them is the First World War memorial in my suburb of Patcham - a decayed building in a small garden kept in a state of benign neglect by the council. A few metres away traffic thunders along the main road to London.
It's a grandiose and sad little memorial, which doesn't seem to know whether it's celebrating or mourning war.
