An Ichneumon Wasp
Dr Gavin Broad at the Natural History Museum claims that a large number of examples of ichneumons on the internet are incorrectly identified.
He also says that microscopic detail is really required for a correc ID and it is rarely possible to identify one from a photograph.
In that case, I shall not attempt an ID, simply describing this as a parasitic ichneumon wasp.
(Isn't the internet such a great source of misinformation?)
This one very nearly came to a sticky end. It flew into a spider's web, but fortunately the spider was young and the web was weak so it made its lucky escape just in time as the spider rapidly approached. It must have been traumatised by the experienced because it sat still for long enough for me to fetch my camera and take three photos before flying off. This is the best one.
