Day 275 - Layers

Why is Photoshop so complicated??? Wanted to try and set up some pattern presets but I got confused!!! I see so many photos with a pattern layer added and it looks great but I have no idea how to replicate it!

All I did here was photograph a piece of crumpled paper then added it as a layer but it doesn't look right, or rather it doesn't have the effect I'm looking for...

We have a practical night on Wednesday at the camera club so hopefully someone can help me!
