Abandoned Conker

It looks so bright gleaming in the sun! Yet no small boy has picked it up the moment it fell. In fact, there are masses of abandoned conkers in this park, so evidently the game of "conkers" is not as popular as it once was (H & S fears?).

We have quite often seen the horse chestnut trees in this park on my Blipfoto pages. Here, indeed, is the very tree from which this beautiful specimen fell.

This place is Cutteslowe Park, of which it is written:

Cutteslowe Park has herbaceous borders and despite disease damage during 2009-2012 there remain many horse chestnut trees. Until further disease management in 2010 and early 2011, the park also contained some superb examples of White Willow trees.

The park has a children's pool, crazy golf, small aviary, duck pond, and tennis courts. There is a miniature steam railway run by the City of Oxford Society of Model Engineers.

However, these words hint at a problem for the lovely horse chestnut avenues and stands of trees. Many of the trees have been found to be diseased, and it may be necessary to fell a high proportion. How sad!
