Fremantle

Today was one of those "expected to be a nice day, turned out to be a fantastic day" days. Its a public holiday here, so Uncle Chris was home and we all went to Fremantle. Built around the prison which housed mainly British convicts until far more recently than I can comprehend, its a stunning place.

We had a walk through the harbour and saw swarms of jelly fish. First destination was the huge park just away from the harbourside. We saw wild parrots as we played. The children all ran flying the kite with Uncle Chris, while the mummies enjoyed a coffee and prepared the picnic. After a quick lunch for the children, we walked in to the centre. We watched a rather crackers but good street performer outside the market. The spot was a bit like Fremantle's version of Covent Garden.

The market itself was an absolute treasure trove of wonderful stalls. I had my ring sling on from wearing Katie on the walk in. A gentleman called me from his stall and tried to sell me a Perth-based firm's own. The children ate the biggest corn on the cobs I've ever seen. We all had gorgeous turkish food for lunch. Stalls and stalls of stunning aboriginal art, local crafts, beautiful foods. A very Mummy place!

After lunch, we took the children up the hill to the Prison. We had expected them to have a quick look, pose for a picture or two, and be done. But no. They were utterly fascinated. Katie and Max looked at every single display and exhibit. They tried the "visiting area", they listened as we read them (edited) information about the convicts, about the history of the prison, they looked at all the art in the exhibition of current Australian prisoners' work. And they asked questions for the rest of the day.

They all had a snooze on the way home so Lauren and I took them swimming afterwards. Katie loved the pool. It had slides small enough that she was happy to go on them, it had deep but small in size pools that she was off without being bothered by bigger kids. She had a wonderful time. We got them a quick treat Macdonalds for tea. They all fell asleep on the way home - although didnt stay that way for very long!
