Mount Washington Cog Railway

This is the connection between the engine and the carriage on the Mount Washington Cog Railway. Apart from the electric cable there is no coupling between the two. The carriage (we were assured) has good air brakes and, in any case, if anything went wrong it is better for the carriage not to be fixed to a 23 ton engine.
The cog railway goes from 2,700 feet up to the summit of Mount Washington at 6,280 feet. At times the angle of ascent is 37%
