Bumps in the Road

Nappy snaps

10 months old and the centrefold of the Daily Record. My word son, you've made it already. Thanks to Maria Croce for such a lovely write-up, and to Blipfoto for providing the opportunity to record and share such an intimate journal.

New Dad records precious moments of wife's pregnancy and birth of son for online community.

When Jim Jagger found out he was going to be a dad, he decided to capture every day of his own family life through a camera.

The 35-year-old, an animator for best-selling video game Grand Theft Auto V, started keeping a journal on photo blogging platform Blipfoto when his partner Nikki Hightower, 33, discovered she was pregnant in April 2012.

Not surprisingly, it's very far removed from the world of car thieves in the video game he worked on. It gives a fascinating insight into Jim's very normal, down-to-earth life through pictures taken every day for his son.

It included the sad news of the death of his beloved dad in August 2012 - referred to as the bump's grandfather in the blog - through Nikki's pregnancy and the arrival of their baby son Ernie, called the Wee Man in the Blip, who's now 10 months old.

"I got a new camera and wanted to learn more about it and take a photo every day", said Jim, from Edinburgh.

"I never had the material or the motivation to do it. Then when we found out Nikki was pregnant, it seemed like the perfect platform to do it and chart everything and then give it to Ernie when he's older.

"When I do animation at work it takes so long, I do love a photo as it's so quick."

He's now taken more than 500 snaps but has deliberately not included much about his work on the site although he does mention the day his latest video game was released to mark it off in history.

Though his work is known worldwide, Jim's happy that no one recognises him as an individual. He said: "It's all about the game; it's not about the people who make the game."

And just like any other responsible parent, his son won't get to look at his work until he's old enough. He said: "It's an 18 game. I certainly won't let my son play 18 games until he's 18."

The photo diary on Blipfoto is proving invaluable to friends and family - to keep up with Ernie's progress - but Jim has now also become friends with other people all over the world through the site.

And he's vowed to continue taking a snapshot of his son's life every day. Here we take a peek inside his Blipfoto journal.
