200 tonnes of steel

I have driven past the Angel of the North hundreds of times, but never once actually stopped, parked and walked up to it. Until today.

As we made our way back from Newcastle (via the Metro Centre sadly!), we suddenly decided today was the day to stop and look.

You can see from the road that it is enormous, but until you see it close up, it is difficult to appreciate just how big it is. 20 metres high and with a wing span of 54 metres, it was originally the biggest sculpture in Britain, but I think it has since been overtaken by more recent installations in London. It was commissioned by Gateshead Council, created by Antony Gormley from 200 tonnes of weathered steel and installed in 1998.

It must have been blipped many times, but this is my version, on a gloomy day that suddenly became sunny. Perhaps better large.
