OK now this is confusing!

Many moons ago when I was a lad (add cloth cap for authenticity)! We used to swim in the river all the time (and the canal but that's another story) in those days there were no life buoys dotted up and down the river and I don't remember anyone coming to harm. In fact at this very spot we used to go (very bravely) night fishing for a giant pike.

The council sign warns of the danger of swimming anywhere in the river. Yet the sign attached to the life buoy invites people to a fun swim of three or six miles.
