Foragers

So, every since I got the book, "The Thrifty Forager," I've been itching to get out there and start picking things. The only trouble was I didn't know where to find many foragable foods. It turns out the local park has a lot of good stuff and it was right under our noses all the time! We collected some rosehips (here Monkey is helping me), some crabapples and I finally found some good hawethorn berries that taste a bit like apples, like they should, and not bland with a horrible aftertaste like the other ones I kept finding. I started making some fruit leather with the bits and pieces and other fruit that was a bit over-ripe in our fridge. It turns out making fruit leather is kind of a pain in the ass! It took ages to chop the fruit and squish the pips out in a sieve after it's cooked, and even longer to dry the stuff out! It's a shame because it's a really good way to use up fruit that's a bit old and also to use for foraging, especially when I haven't picked enough to do anything else with! It's supposed to be delicious, as well. We will have to see when it's done.

I have a small bag of rosehips left, I'll have to figure out something to do with them.
