Waterfall?.........
..........well, sort of!
So much of Lincolnshire has been reclaimed from the sea over centuries, there are many Dykes, which look just like small rivers, all over the Eastern part of the County (like in the Netherlands). When low lying areas of land are drained, the general method is to dig drainage ditches. However, if the area is below sea level then it is necessary to pump the water upwards into water channels that finally drain into the sea.
The Victorians understood this concept, and in the United Kingdom they built pumping stations with water pumps, powered by steam engines to accomplish this task. In Lincolnshire, large areas of wetland at sea level, called The Fens, were turned into rich arable farmland by this method. The land is full of nutrients because of the accumulation of sedimentary mud that created the fertile soil. This Sluice looked quite pretty with the morning sun shining on the tumbling water which was running fairly fast due to the recent heavy rain.
If you look very closely, you can see a lone fisherman on the far left hand bank and partial reflection of a swan. (On larger, they are easier to see!)
(Definition of Sluice (from the Dutch “sluis”)
1 (also sluice gate) a sliding gate or other device for controlling the flow of water, especially one in a lock gate.
2. (also sluiceway) an artificial water channel for carrying off overflow or surplus water).
A much better day - lots of sun - no clouds at all at the moment and a temperature of 52 Deg.F. - be good if it stays that way - fingers crossed.
Hope you all have sun too!
