Chuckie Pend

I love this name but this is the first opportunity I've had to blip it.

According to RCAHMS the name refers to Morrison Street Lane as stables for William Duncan, however the City of Edinburgh Council refers to it as an alternative name for St. Anthony Place Lane, running from No. 24 Morrison Street, northwards, through a pend. (St Anthonys Place is that section of Morrison street between Semple Steet and Lothian Road, as appears on Kay's map of 1836).

The 1823 maps show an unnamed lane on that line which terminated on St Cuthbert's Street. This disappears by the 1837 maps and by 1848 the area was taken up by the Caledonian Railway, which, in turn, gave way to the present development of Festival Square.

Thus, Chuckie Pend now forms a quiet short cut between Morrison street and Festival Square, avoiding the traffic of Lothian Road.
