Matthew is on a bake-off mission, so we got stuck into Mary Berry's creme patissiere recipe this afternoon and made proper profiteroles for tea time. Denis and Adeline came over with fresh lamb for a roast dinner and the whole day was very home grown and delicious.
Last week, for the first time ever, we paid a chimney sweep; so lighting up the stove today was supposed to be a treat. Actually it involved an hour after dusk keeping 5 children outside because he had blocked it so badly not even a tiny bit of smoke could escape and was filling the house and pouring out the velux. We couldn't quite believe it wouldn't draw so we just kept trying to relight the fire. Eventually transferred all burning smoking things to the main fireplace and a cracking evening followed, with late dinner, marshmallows, plenty red wine and good chat.
