Hodge Close

Mixed weather forecast today suggested that the south of the lakes had drier weather prospects that the north. So after breakfast we set out for the south lakes. Spend three-quarters of the day at Slaters Bridge and Cathedral quarry before moving onto Hodge Close where the silver birch trees had really started to change colour. The birches tend to be the first to change up here, and Hodge is a good location as it's fairly high, so they are the first birches to turn.

I love the combination of the almost lunar landscape of the disused quarry and the efforts of the trees and other vegetation's attempts to claim it back to nature. The old explosives hut is looking more tumbledown every time I go there - I believe it is a listed building, so something may have to be done to it in the next couple of years if collapse is to be avoided.
