Life in Newburgh on Ythan

A pair of tongues

Another day, another fungus. This, I think, is a Sand Earth Tongue Geoglossum arenarium, a rather rare species in these parts.

It is certainly an earth tongue but precisely which one is more difficult to say! As Michael Kuo at MushroomExpert.com says:
The little black "Earth Tongues" of the Geoglossaceae family are a nightmare to identify--but if you are a microscope geek, they often reward you with fascinating and funky microscopic features.

Anyway, it looks like other photographs of Geoglossum arenarium that I have seen and it most certainly is living in sand!
