1 June and the whales have arrived
The first Southern Right Whales arrived today - about a month earlier than last year. This pic was taken between Gordons Bay and Rooi Els this morning.
These two giants (a bit smaller than the Blue Whale) come inshore in June/July to loll in the warm (12C!) water, relax and in a couple of months, breed.
It's a spectacular show if you are lucky enough to see them. They flap their fins, roll on the water and wag their tails. If I get lucky, I'll catch a picture of them and Blip it. Otherwise, this is about as much as you will see of these wonderful mammals.
