Stripped bare ...
We had to laugh. In Dalmeny Estate, on the edge of Edinburgh, a flock of sheep had demolished a field of kale so that only the stems remained. In the next field, beyond them and out of shot, another lot had only just started on the kale and only their heads could be seen as they explored the tunnels between the leaves; apparently the ones that so amused us had been in the same position a couple of days earlier.
We met a farmer piling still more sheep out of a trailer. He obligingly pulled up one of the stems and invited us to taste it - to see what the sheep were enjoying so much. It was sweet, insofar as it had any taste. We didn't try the leaves, but we did wonder if the sheep would taste of greens if they ever got to the table ...
