Leeds City Market Rooftop

Way above the street furniture and other detritus of city living, the rooftops of Leeds City Market sparkle in a splash of sunshine today. The market first opened as an open air market in 1822, while the first covered sections were constructed between 1850 and 1875. The plans for the market on the Kirkgate site that were first unveiled in 1850 were based on Joseph Paxton’s Crystal Palace in London’s Hyde Park. Since that time the market has seen many changes, expansions and developments, but evidence of the grandiose basis of the original vision is still readily evidenced by the ornate facades and roof line.
