Floating Garden
The floating gardens are an idea by artist Robert Jasper Grootveld already thirty years ago. He became enthused by the specific buoyancy of Styrofoam and thus the ability to create permanent objects on the water. After making several trial islands and rafts, they were shown to withstand the test of time. A few years ago Zeeburg embraced his idea and, supported by the municipality of Amsterdam, the realization of the two islands was made possible. As part of a work experience project twenty workers fabricated the networks and the film that holds the styrofoam blocks together to protect them against the weather. The first islands were gradually formed at Grootveld's barrack on the Zeeburgerkade.
The first island is a so-called 'users' island and can be accessed by anyone. The other island, the natural garden, is moored in the middle of the Entrepôthaven and will be left so that nature gets full play to his fate.
