The Red Telephone Box

I have a liking for the red telephone boxes of old. Not sure if any of them in the picture still works, it was getting late and I have a mobile. The one's pictured are the K2 edition box which is more familiar with most people.

The first standard public telephone box (kiosk) introduced by the UK Post Office was produced in concrete in 1920. The red telephone box was the result of a competition in 1924 to design a kiosk that would be acceptable to the London Metropolitan Boroughs.

At one point across the country, most had been replaced by a new style of phone box, a result from privatization of Post Office telephones and the rise of British Telecom. London being the exception (a tourist must photograph thing).

Some are still in use today and very few high-quality examples remain as display models.

Sorry Spokeshave, if you are viewing this, I thought this was a better Blip than the one I had of the LFM lower foyer.
