Salobreña

On Sunday a few of us decided to go to the beach at Salobreña, which I think is our closest one and only takes about 50 mins on the bus. Its a pretty small village, and has a very typical Spanish feel so quite a contrast to Gibraltar the previous day! When we arrived there seemed to be some kind of fiesta going on with lots of people in flamenco costumes and music coming from all directions, but the beach itself wasn't too busy. The beach is all pebbles and when we ran into the sea it was absolutely freezing, so more reminiscent of British beaches! You got used to the cold after a while though, or more you just lost all feeling from the waist down. After chilling on the beach for a while, Dave, Andres and I decided to walk up to the Moorish castle, which is the only other main feature of the pueblo, and is of course up a giant hill. You would have thought I'd be sick of walking up hills after the Gibraltar hike. It was actually a really nice walk up, particularly near the top of the hill which is a maze of very tranquil, old streets full of beautiful houses covered in flowers. And there is an incredible view over the beach and the rest of the town. Eventually we got to the top where the castle is situated, only to find that of course it was shut. Should have known really, nothing in Spain is open on a Sunday. I've come to the conclusion that once you add up shutting for siestas every day and being shut all day Sunday, that most shops in Spain are closed more than they're open. And people wonder what went wrong with their economy...
