Ban Jelacic Square
We are in Zagreb - left our house 2am this morning, and arrived some 12 hours later...
Went on a tram from the bus station to the flat we're in (minute, but all we need), and then out for a wander, and some food. This square is the focus of the city, named after a national hero who tried to get autonomy for his country in 1848 - you can just see his equestrian statue in the background.
In the foreground is the fountain that gave its name to the city - legend has it that a tired general asked a young girl to scoop up (zagrabiti in Croatian) water from the spring for him. The spring is called Mandusevak, after the girl, and the city got the name Zagreb after the scoop of water.
Not quite able to place the feel of this city - sort of a cross between all sorts of cities we've been - scruffy like Naples, but quiet like Vienna, grand like Madrid, but unassuming like Lisbon - and then the language, which is baffling so far (all the names above are missing their accents, which I don't know how to do on Blip).
