What a way to spend my birthday
Backblipped 7th October
Standing on top of a hill in the pouring rain that got even more torrential just after this was taken. Though at least you didn't do anything silly to me like you have in previous years!
Lots of rain today so took our time heading out - after trying to resolve some confusion over the scrabble scores last night! Decided somewhere indoors might be the best bet so went to Poldark Tin Mine which was fascinating. How they worked in those conditions I really don't know - looking at the ladder they used to get up and down (thin, wooden and completely vertical) was enough to give me the heebie jeebies! And they had to take their tools up and down each day too!
Back up to Helston afterwards to get our pasties from Horse and Jockey which we ate in the carpark by the lake as it was still raining! Decided to then head over to Goldophin estate as it did look like it was clearing up - though when I asked at the reception area if they had a map of the estate walks, I was met with incredulous looks and a "why would you want to do that - you won't see anything today!". We rebelled though and went off to climb the hill. Rained all the way up but it was manageable and then literally just after I took this photo, the heavens opened up even more and added a nice strong wind into the mix too. Perfectly exposed place for it to happen as well! We then very soggily made our way back down and headed off to get some fresh fish from Porthleven.
Back to the cottage for rather nice welcome drinks with Ferris Vyvyan - the owner of Trelowarren - and got chatting to a few people - and as you do, you discover what a small world it is. Several interesting connections just within a wee group of us! We also discovered one couple there were just starting a 6 month lease on one of the cottages on the estate. He can run his business really from anywhere and, other than a trip back to London once a month, they're starting an exciting Cornish adventure!
Amazing dinner of mussels followed by fish burgers but rubbish film tonight!
Pasty scores:
James 9 (huge and tasty)
Jenny 7 (couldn't get cheese!)
