Lascaux II

A few weeks ago I have read the book 'The caves of Périgord' by Martin Walker which was basically now our inspiration to visit Lascaux. The original Lascaux cave is closed to public since 1963, as the paintings started to be damaged by the heat and humidity brought in by visitors. Today an exact replica can be visited, just 200 meters away from the original place. Therefore the name Lascaux II.

The visit was overwhelming. No wonder some people call it the Sistine chapel of cave art. Looking at pictures from Lascaux is nothing compared to what can seen in the cave. The animals are painted by using the rock formation and almost appear to be in 3D ! Hard to describe and better to be seen.

The starting point to visit the caves is the village of Montignac. As taking pictures in the cave is forbidden, here a view of Montignac.
