The Glasgow Guild

This morning I managed to get some rest and catch up with my blip comments. I thought the rest of the day would be relaxing until I found out my wife had arranged for the fitting of a hall and landing carpet. So ended up moving furniture and taking two doors off there hinges.

This afternoon in between watching the football I managed to cut the lawns and do a bit of tidying up in the garden.

Tonight we were invited by John and Jonathan to the Grand Opening of The Glasgow Guild in Glasgow. Their new shop offers a furniture restoration, upholstery and polishing service as well as selling quality furniture and furnishings.

It was John Cowie and Jonathan Conkey, owners of The Glasgow Guild, who discovered the beautiful Mackintosh Music Cabinet on one of their country auction trips.

Since the auction, further research has confirmed the provenance. The original watercolour of the cabinet design of 1898 is in the Hunterian Museum and is also mentioned in the definitive book on Mackintosh by Roger Billcliffe, where it is described as 'not known if executed'. The last time the cabinet had been seen would have been in the 1950s. On Thursday evening Helen McCook will be giving a talk on the missing textile design for the Music Cabinet at the Mackintosh Church.

This is a shot on West Graham Street of the Glasgow Guild shop from across the road. It was about 15 degrees tonight, so we were having drinks outside. How unbelievable is that in October. When we left the launch party, we headed over to Mother India for a fabulous meal.
